Imagine you’ve been talking with the AI for an hour, working together on a business plan. At the start, you told it your company name, “SparkleWidgets.” You’ve covered topics like marketing, pricing, and hiring.
Then, you ask: “Okay, write a summary of the plan for SparkleWidgets.”
The AI pauses and replies: “Here is a summary for your widget company. By the way, what is the name of your company?”
It’s frustrating. It seems like the AI suddenly forgot everything. You told it the name and talked about it for an hour. How could it miss something so simple?
The answer is simple: It didn’t forget. The information was pushed off the cliff.
To see why this happens, let’s look at how the AI’s memory works. Many people think it stores everything you say, like a hard drive. But it doesn’t work that way.
Instead, it uses something called a Context Window. The easiest way to understand this is to think of a whiteboard.
The Sliding Whiteboard
Imagine you are sitting in a room with the AI. On the wall, there is a single whiteboard.
This whiteboard has a hard limit. It can only hold 10,000 words—no more than that.
- The Conversation Begins: You walk in and write your first prompt at the top of the board: “My company is called SparkleWidgets.”
- The Response: The AI reads the board, picks up a marker, and writes its answer below yours.
- The Loop: You write a new question below that. The AI writes a new answer below that.
At first, everything works well. The AI can look up and see “SparkleWidgets” at the top of the board, so it knows your company’s name.
But eventually, you reach the bottom of the board. The whiteboard is full. You have a new question to ask, but there is no space to write it.
What does the AI do? It doesn’t buy a new whiteboard. It doesn’t save the old writing in a file cabinet.
Instead, it takes an eraser and wipes away the top line.
It erases the very first thing you wrote to make space for your new message at the bottom. The conversation moves up. As soon as “SparkleWidgets” is erased from the top, the AI no longer remembers it.
The “Goldfish” Effect
This is called the Goldfish Effect. As the conversation goes on, the AI knows less about your specific problem, even though it still sounds fluent.
It might even start breaking rules you set earlier in the conversation.
- Hour 1: “Don’t use emojis.” -> AI obeys.
- By the second hour, when the board is full, the “Don’t use emojis” rule is gone, so the AI starts using emojis again.
The AI isn’t ignoring you. It simply can’t see the rule anymore.
How to Fix It: The “Summary Refresh”
If you’re working as a Prompt Engineer, you need to manage the whiteboard. You can’t let the conversation go on without limits.
For longer projects, use the Summary Refresh technique. Before the board fills up—usually after 20 to 30 messages—ask the AI to summarize the information.
The Prompt:
“Stop. We are about to start a new chat window. Please write a detailed summary of everything we have decided so far, including the company name, the tone of voice rules, and the key decisions. I will paste this summary into the next chat.”
Next, copy that summary, start a new chat (a clean whiteboard), and paste it at the top. This refreshes the AI’s memory.
