What a 15th-century lawsuit and a lead letter ‘A’ can teach us about the age of AI

The revolution of the 15th century wasn’t defined by the scent of old paper or libraries. Instead, it was shaped by the strong, industrial smells of linseed oil, soot, and melted lead.

Growing up shifting between the worlds of Rheinland-Pfalz and Atlanta,Georgia, I spent my youth navigating two very different versions of mass production. In Atlanta, our school trips took us to the Coca-Cola factory, a symbol of the standardized consumer object. But in Germany, we visited the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz. Thinking back, it was a strange juxtaposition: standing at the birthplace of history’s first mass-produced item, only to later walk through the halls of the company that created one of the most recognizable mass-produced items in the modern world.

The workshop in Mainz looked more like a blacksmith’s forge than a printer’s studio. There, we watched a master craftsman tilt a hand-mold, pour in a shimmering mix of lead and tin, and snap it open to reveal a perfect, mirrored letter “A.”

At the end of the tour, everyone wanted to keep one of those small, heavy lead letters. Holding it in your hand was a real lesson in the building blocks of information. It felt solid, lasting, and unexpectedly sharp. In a way, it was history’s first piece of written code.

The Man and the Machine

To understand this change, it helps to know what came before. In 1440, getting a book meant someone had to copy every letter by hand with a quill. Making a single Bible could take almost a year and cost as much as a farm. Knowledge was tightly controlled, and only the Church had access.

Johannes Gutenberg, who was a goldsmith, didn’t just invent a machine. He created a whole system. He brought together three existing technologies to make something new: the wine press for pressure, oil-based ink that stuck to metal better than water-based ink, and movable type.

The Chinese had used woodblock printing for centuries, but wood was too soft for the fine details of the Roman alphabet. Gutenberg’s real breakthrough was the Hand Mould, a tool that let people cast thousands of identical metal letters in a single day. The Hand Mould used adjustable molds that could be quickly opened to remove a new letter and reset for the next one. This device made printing faster and kept the size and style of letters consistent, so entire books looked the same. This innovation led to the Gutenberg Bible, also called the '42-line Bible.' It was the first mass-produced object in history, and its quality matched the best scribes in Europe.

The Visionary and the VC

If you look past the polished museum displays, you see that the 1450s were full of venture capital, stolen ideas, and anxious workers.

Gutenberg was a middle-aged, stubborn craftsman who had spent decades failing in secret. Before the press, he had run a failed “get-rich-quick” scheme, making mirrors for pilgrims. He was an obsessive perfectionist who spent years in “R&D,” obsessing over the specific chemistry of an alloy that wouldn’t shrink when it cooled. However, he lacked the most important resource of his time: cash.

Then Johann Fust, a wealthy goldsmith, stepped in and gave what would be the 15th-century version of a large Series A investment: 800 guilders. In that time period, 800 guilders was usually used to ransom captured knights or fund private armies. It was a huge sum to risk on one craftsman working with lead and ink.

Fust was not interested in the Bible as art; he wanted to produce it. In 1455, just as the 42-line Bible was nearly finished, Fust took over Gutenberg’s business. In a lawsuit recorded in the Helmasperger Notarial Instrument, Fust claimed Gutenberg had mismanaged the money. The court agreed with Fust, allowing him to take the types, equipment, and inventory, and removing Gutenberg just before his greatest success.

The “Human-in-the-Loop” Strategist

To make the stolen technology commercially viable, Fust needed a “product lead” who understood the “User Interface” of the medieval world. He hired Peter Schoeffer, Gutenberg’s most talented assistant.

Schoeffer had been a scribe, skilled in the craft the press was meant to replace. Instead of resisting the machine, he worked with it. Schoeffer used his calligrapher’s eye to adjust the lead types until the printed pages looked just like the best hand-written manuscripts.

This was the birth of Skeuomorphism, making new technology look like the old one to bypass the public’s “uncanny valley” reflex. They even left empty spaces for “rubricators” (scribes) to add red initials by hand, creating the first “human-in-the-loop” hybrid workflow, as seen in the Mainz Psalter of 1457.

The Logic of the Renaissance

The move from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance marked a shift from a culture of scribes to a culture of print. Elizabeth Eisenstein, a historian specializing in the history of early printing, emphasized this transformation in her thesis, The Printing Revolution. She argued that the change was driven by two main factors:

  • Fixity: Before the press, no two copies of a book were exactly the same. Scribes often made small mistakes that added up over time. When you were a child, you may have played the lunchroom game where one end of the table would pass a message down the row until it reached the end, and you would compare it, then laugh because it was never the same. Imagine that across every written text. The press brought fixity, so people across Europe could finally read the same information. This was also the start of the peer-reviewed standard.
  • Scale: In 1450, there were about 30,000 books in all of Europe. By 1500, there were over 20 million. The cost of knowledge dropped, and books moved from the hands of the clergy to a new, literate merchant class.

While Elizabeth Eisenstein said the press gave information a built-in "fixity," historians like Adrian Johns remind us that this trust took time to build (The Nature of the Book). Early printers had to show their machines were more reliable than people. Johns pointed out that "fixity" was not just about machines; it was a social process based on trust and community validation. Printers had to overcome skepticism and slowly build confidence in print as a trustworthy medium. This change took effort to set quality standards and consistency, turning mechanical skill into a 'brand promise.'

The Scribe Counter-Attack

The main content creators of the time, the Scribes’ Guilds, pushed back with arguments similar to today’s debates about AI. Filippo de Strata, a vocal monk and scribe, asked the government to ban the press, calling it a “plague” that ruined the purity of writing. His main arguments were:

  • The “Spirit” Argument: A hand-written book contained the “spirit and breath” of the writer; a machine-pressed book was “dead.”
  • The Gatekeeper Argument: If information became too cheap, the “wrong people” would read things they shouldn’t, leading to social collapse.
  • The Quality Argument: Scribes argued that “Artificial Writing” was prone to mechanical errors that a human would never make.

The “Black Magic” Accusation

When Fust took his printed Bibles to Paris, the locals were terrified. Because he could produce dozens of identical copies at a speed no scribe could match, rumors spread that he was in league with the devil. He was reportedly arrested on suspicion of witchcraft. The Parisians couldn’t conceive of a machine doing “human” work, so they defaulted to the supernatural. In a sense, they were the first to encounter the “Uncanny Valley” of automated intelligence.

The Outcome

The scribes weren’t wiped out; they found new roles. The best became the first editors, publishers, and font designers. The hard work of copying was given to machines, while people decided what was worth printing. This shift helped drive the Renaissance.

The printing press didn’t end the role of the writer; it created the author. It didn’t end news; it created the journalist. There was fear, lawsuits, and protests from scribes, but the rapid growth of ideas, powered by a goldsmith’s money and a small lead letter, changed the world.

Looking back, this history feels strangely familiar. In a real sense, we are watching the next version of the lead letter being created right now. Today, technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning are reshaping industries and communication, much as the printing press did in the 15th century. As we harness these technologies to mass-produce information, we stand at the cusp of a new era where the digital realm echoes the revolutionary change sparked by Gutenberg’s innovation.
